Don't want to, don't like to carry a firearm for self defense, that's ok. There are viable alternative to carrying a lethal weapon for protection.
Some other obvious self-defense items are pepper spray and knives. Pepper spray is good to have, but be very aware of where you use it and how you carry it. Pepper spray can effect you in closed quarters (indoors) and even on windy days. And knives can be difficult to wield without proper practice.
Whatever self-defense option(s) you choose, practice often.
Additional things to consider:
Create space – Close combat isn’t ideal though sometimes necessary. However, do your best to create space long before any actual encounter, this can be achieved by having good situational awareness.
Family – Do you regularly have family around, especially small children? The type of items we carry and how accessible they are might depend on our daily routines that we have with our children.
Local laws – Local laws might dictate what you can and can’t carry. Not only that but also how you use certain items and how you choose to defend yourself and when. Know your local laws.
In saying all the above, let’s take a look at some regular everyday items that aren’t necessarily “made for defense” but can be used as self-defense items:
Flashlight
Not only can you blind someone with it, but you can also use most flashlights to strike someone with. In a pinch, just throw it at them and the flinch reflex should give you time to take a few steps back.
Pen
Any pen will work as far as self-defense purposes go, but tactical pens are made specifically so that you can strike someone. Putting force behind any pen will cause sufficient pain.
Water bottle
I generally carry around a water bottle or some kind of drink. I usually carry a hydro flask but any bottle will do.
Keys
There’s really no ‘ideal’ way to hold keys, but probably the best way would be to hold them in between your fingers. Really, the best way would be to hold them tightly in your hand, but that’s usually not possible with such small keys.
Purse
Put that purse to good use! Swing it hard and fast. A messenger bag or backpack can also be used the same way.
Groceries
Groceries are a common item that we might have in our hands. I know you just spent money on that food, but your life is more important. Swing it hard and fast.
Cell phone
Many people carry their phones in their hands or very close-by. Wield it like there’s no tomorrow. I know we all love our phones, but your life is more important than a cell phone. Hit ’em, chuck it, whatever works.
Your body
Your body is probably your best EDC item! If you’re in close combat, kick them in the shins, elbow to the chest, head to the chin, scratch their eyes; do whatever you have to in order to get away.
Cane/Umbrella
If you are carrying a cane or umbrella, that’s a great item to use against someone else. They even have canes and umbrellas that are made specifically for self-defense.
The main lesson here is that anything can be improvised as a weapon. Especially as something that you can use to distract or throw in order to create space.
Always be aware and always keep your head on a swivel.
Also,
Your life is more important than stuff.
Don’t worry about “losing” or “breaking” any of your stuff in the process of saving your life. Anything and everything should be used against someone who is trying to do you and your family harm.
Stay safe out there.
